High School Football Scores

The Coaches' Corner
Weekly thoughts from area coaches.

James Sharper (assistant),

A.C. Flora: Said the game with Columbia was a battle of two halves. The Falcons were "all jacked up" and had a pep rally earlier that day, but they wore down in the fourth quarter. On facing Mid-Carolina next, "They've got a great tailback and fullback."

Jeff Scott, Blythewood:

He thought his kids had a bit of "the deer in the headlights look" against Ridge View. Down only 7-0 at half- time, his kids looked like they were down 49-0. The Bengals will travel to Lamar next who won its opener 68-0.

Brad Coleman,

Brookland-Cayce:

Said it was frustrating to lose a game that close (Airport 20 B-C 17, 2OT). The Bearcats had opportunities. They travel to RNE next and do not want to look at 0-2. Coleman hopes to give RNE a good game and see their starters longer than Lexington did.

Bill Kimrey, Dutch Fork:

Kimrey thought Chapin played the Silver Foxes really hard despite the score and acknowledged his offense probably does only run three plays. "I can only remember three plays at my age." He felt his D-Line played poorly, and if they play like that against Irmo, "Coach Hanna will trap us for 300 yards." He joked Coach Hanna only runs three plays too; quarterback right, left, and up the middle.

John Daye,

Heathwood Hall: Joked he needed B-C coach Brad Coleman's electrician (B-C had to finish its game with Airport on Saturday due to malfunctions with stadium lights). The Highlanders played statistically even with Porter Gaud but fumbled twice inside the 5-yard line. They travel to Christ Church to face a team that has scored a total of 95 points in their first two ball games.

Bob Hanna, Irmo:

He remarked freshman Mustafa Greene is going to be a special player. Greene returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Irmo faces rival Dutch Fork next and Hanna says, "Coach Kimrey has one of the better teams he's had since I've been here."

Demond Logan, Keenan:

Said his Raiders killed themselves with turnovers against Midland Valley. Four turnovers inside the ten yard line including twice on the one-yard-line are morale killers. One of those fumbles included a 75-yard pass on the third play of the game which the receiver was tackled and fumbled on the one yard line. On facing Eau Claire next, Logan says the Shamrocks are a physical team that run the ball. The Raiders will have to stop the run.

J.W. Montgomery,

Lower Richland: Joked he appreciated Dreher coach Bill Bacon spotting him 14 points. The Diamond Hornets had three costly fumbles against Dreher. Montgomery was playing with third and fourth string tailbacks due to injuries. Said his kids were worn out and cramping towards the end of the game. He says the Diamond Hornets will have to learn how to win.

Jay Frye,

Richland Northeast: Said he was not particularly pleased with the way his team played against Lexington. The Cavalier offense moved inside the 30 then fizzled. The Cavaliers played well on defense in the second half. Frye said anytime you can win the first game is a good game. On the upcoming match-up with B-C, Frye said their offense is extremely explosive, and they present a lot of problems with their athletes.

Raymond Jennings,

Ridge View: Says he's glad to be out of the game with Blythewood. He had six guys cramp up which is the first time in two years. Receiver Brandon King actually cramped up celebrating on the sidelines. On facing White Knoll next, "Last two times we haven't matched their intensity."

Jimmy Noonan,

Spring Valley: Said his team was very lucky and fortunate to have a win against Fairfield Central. The Vikings turned the ball over three out of five times in the red zone. Tight-end Mason Cloy was forced to play fullback and averaged six yards a carry. The Vikings are now looking for a kicker when, after missing an extra-point attempt, Noonan says their current kicker said, "I can't do this anymore." On facing Lexington, "They've had a lot of success against Spring Valley. They'll be ready to play."
