Residents of Forest Acres and surrounding areas joined Elliot and the Untouchables on the roof-top of Midtown at Forest Acres, formally Richland Fashion Mall, from 6 pm to 9 pm Thursday, September 14. It was the first in a series of free Rooftop Rhythms concerts. Music lovers of all ages gathered to groove to the rockin' blues and jazz of one of Columbia's favorite bands.

Lissette Voltz of Leapin' Lizards Play Center set up and supervised activities for the youngsters in the crowd. Leapin' Lizards is a new business located just off Forest Drive behind Blockbuster. Voltz describes the new business as "an indoor play area for children along with a café, small toy shop, and a party center all in one." Judging from the smiles from the under eight crowd on the rooftop, Leapin' Lizards is already a hit.

The Forest Acres Restaurant and Merchants Association sold beverages and snacks and a good time was had by all. The dancing man, who just had heart surgery was one of the few to actually get up and dance but many others tapped their toes and swayed to the music of the band. Despite rain earlier in the day, it was a perfect night for a family friendly concert under the stars. Eddie Wales from the Forest Acres Restaurant and Merchants Association and his crew were out in force to make the event a success, and many members of Forest Acres City Council came out for a pleasant evening among the masses.

Three more free concerts are planned for the rooftop venue in the coming weeks. Calvin & Friends rocked the roof with rock & roll favorites and party tunes on September 21st. J'Ouvert will thrill the crowd with Caribbean calypso soca on September 28 and the Black Bottom Biscuits will entertain bluegrass and rocakabilly fans in the final concert on October 5th.

Only three concerts remain, and they'll be held rain or shine. Bring your own chairs, but coolers are not allowed.
