The Coaches' Corner
Weekly thoughts from area coaches.

Robin Bacon, A.C. Flora:

Sept. 14: A.C. Flora 6

Chester 44

Said he experienced the worst four minute nightmare of his football career against Chester. Falcons were down 8-0 with 40 seconds to go in the first half. Several mistakes later, they were down 22-0 by half- time and 34-0 after the first three minutes of the second half. On facing Eau Claire next, said the Shamrocks have been in every game they've played.

Jeff Scott, Blythewood:

Sept. 15: Blythewood 24

Fairfield Central 19

Said the Bengals were glad to get a win, but for the second week in a row they've given up a touchdown on each of their opponents opening drives. DB Labranzo Rish made a one-handed interception to save the game. The week before against RNE, he caused a game-saving fumble. On facing Dreher next, said the Blue Devils' Nick Bethea has lots of experience and lots of yards. The Bengals will need injured linebacker Charles White to help contain him.

Brad Coleman,

Brookland-Cayce:

Sept. 15: Brookland-Cayce 6

Columbia 7

Said he has not looked at any game film on the Bearcats' next opponent, White Knoll, because he's been trying to figure out the problems with his offense. On facing White Knoll next who is also 0-4, joked this ought to be the game of the week and a sell-out. "One of us will out ugly the other."

Bill Kimrey, Dutch Fork:

Sept. 15:Dutch Fork 31

White Knoll 0

Said the Silver Foxes played really well, especially on defense. RB Rashad Counts continues to make big plays, and Paul Walton graded out at 98% at tight-end. The biggest problem for Dutch Fork is penalties. The Silver Foxes had nine penalties which cost them 220 yards (counting the yardage taken away plus the penalty yards) and a touchdown. On facing Laurens next, said the Raiders run the spread and a two-tight wishbone offense.

John Daye,

Heathwood Hall:

Sept. 15: Heathwood Hall 14Orangeburg Prep 7

Said Highlanders played extremely well by comparison to previous games. His defense only allowed O-P 115 yards total offense and no offensive touchdowns. Davis Ray got his fourth interception. On facing Wilson Hall next, said the Barons run an unusual offense with tight and spread formations. Daye said he won't try to chart them all.

Bob Hanna, Irmo:

Sept. 15: Irmo 51,

Lower Richland 0

Said Diamond Hornets never quit and seem to be playing with a lot of discipline. DB Yari King set the tone for the game by intercepting and returning LR's first pass for a touchdown. On facing RNE next, said Irmo kids and coaches have a lot of respect for the Cavalier program. Hanna said RNE has run successful fumblerooskies three times in three years.

J.W. Montgomery,

Lower Richland:

Sept. 15: Lower Richland 0

Irmo 51

Said the game with Irmo was one-sided. LR only played for a half, and once the ball starts rolling downhill it's hard to stop. Said the Diamond Hornets will go back to the drawing board and hope to take five or six steps forward not one or two backwards. On facing Sumter next, said "It doesn't get any better...my schedule continues to roll on."

Jay Frye,

Richland Northeast:

Sept. 15: RNE 44

South Pointe 21

Said he may try to get South Pointe off the schedule in the next couple of years because they're going to be good. Frye put QB Gary Gray in to return a kick for the first time this year, and he returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. Mark Barnes played seven plays on offense and scored two touchdowns. On facing Irmo next, said this week gets interesting. It's the same Irmo, just a different year. Frye said that he guessed his team looked forward to the challenge.

Raymond Jennings,

Ridge View:

Sept. 15: Ridge View 35

Airport 28

Said his team got off to its best start rushing the ball in the first half against Airport, but then RB Bucky Kennedy got injured. Jennings said he is most proud of Brian Spencer who switched to DB this year after three years at WR. This could have been tough on Spencer considering RV has passed for nearly 1200 yards already. Spencer had five tackles, an interception, and a pass break-up against Airport. On facing Hartsville next, said it's a football environment, and the Red Foxes are very physical which is the type of game that could hurt the Blazers.

Jimmy Noonan,

Spring Valley:

Sept. 15: Spring Valley 35West Florence 19

Said from the get-go, the game with West Florence had a rough start. The Vikings got lost on the way there when the team bus went through town, then West Florence scored twice quickly to take an early lead. The Vikings settled down and rattled off 35 straight points. RB Lyndon Ingram rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns while OL Kyle Fischer graded out 88% with 10 knockdown blocks. On facing North Augusta next, said the Yellow Jacket coach does a great job with the talent he has.
