Korean Festival takes place October 8

Ssireum, a Korean traditional form of wrestling.

The Korean Festival will be October 8, 2006, at the Korean Community Presbyterian Church, 1412 Richland Street, from 4-8 pm.

Events include:

Performance and Game

1. Fan Dance ("BuCheChum")

This dance is performed by dancers wearing 'hanbok' and carrying ornate, feathered fans in both hands.

2. Taekwondo

Taekwondo is an officially acknowledged international sport that originated in Korea and is today practiced worldwide. Taekwondo uses the whole body, particularly the hands and feet.

3. Ssireum

Ssireum, a Korean traditional form of wrestling.

4. Farmer Dance ("SaMulNoli")

For centuries, every spring and every fall, Korean farmers have performed this lively processional dance to assure a bountiful crop and successful harvest.

Food

1. BulGoGi - Kkochi

Small pieces of beef are skewered, coated in terriyaki sauce, and then grilled.

2. Tteokboki

Rice powder in a spicy and sweet sauce. Meat, vegetables, or ramyeon can be added

3. Kimbab

Cooked rice is slightly seasoned with sesame oil, salt, and sesame seeds, placed on a sheet of dried laver. Strips of ham, pickled radish, seasoned spinach, and egg are then placed close together on the rice; it is then carefully rolled together.

4. BiBimBab

A dish made by mixing rice with various other cooked vegetables.
