The Coaches' Corner

Weekly thoughts from area coaches.

By Mike Maddock

Robin Bacon, A.C. Flora:

Sept. 22: A.C. Flora 22

Eau Claire 6

Said much of the game was a flag-fest. Offensive lineman Kenneth Page was called for holding on three apparent pancake blocks. Mo Holler had two interceptions called back for pass interference. It was a big win for A.C. Flora. On facing Lugoff-Elgin next, said the Demons run a Wing-T.

Jeff Scott, Blythewood:

Sept. 22: Blythewood 51

Dreher 13

Said the Bengals' offense really took off. They scored four of their six touchdowns on audibles called by QB Richard Mounce. Because of that, Scott remarked Mounce is a better play-caller than he is. On facing Camden next, said the defense is very good, and Scott is sure they held Fairfield-Central under 150 yards.

Brad Coleman, Brookland-Cayce:

Sept. 22: Brookland-Cayce 3

White Knoll 28

Said the Timberwolves rammed it down the Bearcats' throats all night. He acknowledged his offense was struggling, but thought his defense was a little better than they showed against White Knoll. Bearcats had 150 yards of offense, 40 of which came from a fake punt. The positive was that no one was knocked out for the year. On facing Swansea next, said it's homecoming for B-C which means lots of distractions. Swansea will pound it right at the Bearcats.

Bill Kimrey, Dutch Fork:

Sept. 22: Dutch Fork 38

Laurens 18

Joked when he left Rashad Counts in the game in the second half to break the school's single game rushing record. Some parents of the second string players may have been calling him names only his wife calls him. Said defensive end Iouli Burroughs had six tackles, three sacks, and a 4.75 GPA. Joked he misses a lot of practice due to honors stuff, but he's smart enough to remember what to do Friday. On facing Lexington next, said the Wildcats are closest to matching Dutch Fork's size.

John Daye,

Heathwood Hall:

Sept. 22: Heathwood Hall 40 Wilson Hall 13

Said this was the best effort by the Highlanders this year. They scored on six of their seven possessions. The game turned on Wilson Hall's fumble on their opening drive. It was an outstanding night offensively, and the defense played well enough. Daye was pleased to beat an "old nemesis." On facing Ben Lippen next, said the Falcons have played really well. They've opened their offense, and senior QB Greg Dunston is a great athlete.

Bob Hanna, Irmo:

Sept. 22: Irmo 47 ,

RNE 33

Said it was a good win for Irmo and the kids showed a lot of character being down for much of the game. The defenses had a lot to do with the score in that they came up with big plays to set up the offenses. Hanna also joked he's been accused of child abuse giving the ball so much to running back Mario Carter. On facing Ridge View next, said (referring to the Blazers' receiving corps) he doesn't know how tall they are, but if you give them too much attention, the running back will run wild.

J.W. Montgomery,

Lower Richland:

Sept. 22: Lower Richland 12

Sumter 45

Said once again the Diamond Hornets faced another great athletic quarterback. His defense played well at the beginning of the game and in the middle of second half. His offense "sort of" played well in the first half. On facing White Knoll next, said the Timberwolves are coming off a big win. They are going to be physical with a good O-line and running back.

Jay Frye,

Richland Northeast:

Sept. 22: RNE 33

Irmo 47

Said the Cavaliers had a colossal meltdown at Irmo, and the Yellow Jackets had a lot to do with that. The Cavs went up 33-14 and decided that was too easy. They decided to make it interesting and allow Irmo 32 straight plays. On facing T.L. Hanna next, said RB Brian Maddox is pretty scary. The Yellow Jackets will give the Cavs a fit. "We'll get to see Radio."

Raymond Jennings,

Ridge View:

Sept. 22: Ridge View 27

Hartsville 21

Said Hartsville was a very tough environment, and it was a terrible night of penalties. Jennings asked for an explanation on a call one time and was charged with a time-out. Said the Blazers got a little back defensively, and the offense had an excellent night. He was proud of his kids for stepping up and bouncing back because they were faced with a lot of "first and forevers." On facing Irmo next, said the Yellow Jackets always play hard, and we've got our work cut out to get the kids ready.

Jimmy Noonan,

Spring Valley:

Sept. 22: Spring Valley 36North Augusta 26

Said he was glad to get the distractions of homecoming out of the way. Both teams punted a total of five times. The Viking "bend but don't break" defensive philosophy is breaking. The teams combined to score 34 points in the fourth quarter. It came down to who had the ball last, and fortunately that was the Vikings. On facing Sumter next, said it's a typical Sumter team with lots of speed and size. They have a great scramble scheme.
