Martha and her sister Mary may just have the corner on Columbia's cookware.
Mary and Martha's, a new kitchen shop, held its grand opening Monday in Forest Park Shopping Center. The founder, Bev Tuller, said the store's name is based on a popular Bible story.
The story tells of two sisters, Martha and Mary, who entertained Jesus regularly. While Martha was busy cooking and cleaning in preparation, Mary chose to spend time with her guest. When Martha complained, Jesus replied, "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
According to Tuller, the store's products are meant to help the "Marthas" get their preparations quickly and easily so they can enjoy time with loved ones.
The store is divided into two sections. The "Martha" side contains the latest and most innovative kitchen gadgets, such as Kai knives and silicon cookware. The "Mary" side, on the other hand, holds whimsical pieces meant for leisurely enjoyment, such as pottery mugs and plates.
The store has been a year and a half in the making. Tuller spent several years selling cooking products for Pampered Chef before deciding she wanted to start selling wholesale.
"When I first approached my accountant about it, he told me I was crazy," she recounted. "I went ahead with the plan anyway."
Tuller said she drummed up support by mailing postcards to acquaintances and networking through friends. Monday's grand opening brought a continual flow of customers. Tuller's only fear was that she would sell out of popular items.
"It's been crazy all day," she said, "but very, very encouraging."
