What happened to Senior Day?
A 44-year-old tradition bites the sawdust

In 1962 after much wheelchair rattling by Gray Panthers, SC State Fair officials agreed to hold a Senior Citizens' Day at the fair. On Thursday, October 25, seniors over 70 were admitted as guests of the fair for that, a tradition that has continued with lowered age requirements for 44 years.

Now, things are different at the Fairgrounds. No free admission. No honored guests. This year Senior Day is Wednesday, October 18. Gate admission is $5 for those 55 years and over. And, hold on to your hat, Granny, seniors may ride the Ferris Wheel for free all day.
