Dr. Robert Seigler, the Columbia native who spearheaded the recovery of the WWII Mitchell B-25 bomber that crashed into Lake Murray in 1943, presented an overview of the project recently to members of the Lake Murray Association and others interested in the plane's history. A sequel to Seigler's presentation was given by Dr. Jim Griffin, executive director of the Southern Museum of Flight. Griffin presented images and information on the plane's more recent history. After its rescue from 150 feet of Lake Murray water, the plane was transported to Birmingham, AL where volunteers at the SMF have cleaned and interpreted the warbird. It is on display there now. Dr. Seigler was misidentified in the October 6, 2006, issue of The Columbia Star . Richard Peterson, who is managing the re-election campaign of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, presented Griffin with a framed enlargement of a newspaper clipping relating the story of Katherine Tapp, Peterson's late aunt, who saw the plane go down and notified a Lake Murray neighbor who rescued the crew. The framed article will become part of the growing SMF exhibit in Birmingham.
