Letter to the Editor
I have read and re-read several times the Statewide Constitutional Amendments for the November 7, 2006, General Election. I do not feel comfortable I will be voting my true preferences due to the wording of the amendments and the explanations. I consider myself to be above average intelligence in reading comprehension, and even with my knowledge of government and my years as a senior citizen I do not comprehend the "lawyer-ese"of these amendments. I would challenge any and all average or above average South Carolina-educated persons to read and explain the intent and/or meaning of all the amendments. We, the electorate, are forced to depend on the newspaper and television media for explanations that are skewed, often inaccurate and biased because they too are unable to understand the intent of the Amendments. Why can't an amendment be stated in plain words? Marriage between one man and one woman is the only lawfully domestic union recognized by the State of South Carolina . This can be read and understood by most voters and takes much less time to read and comprehend. Very few voters will take the time at the polls or before entering the polls to read these amendments, consequently the vote will be whatever is easier, yes to all, no to all, or do nothing to all. Maybe that is the "intent" of those who wrote these Amendments.
