Growing in Columbia
By Mimi M. Maddock

Yellow angel trumpet

This 12' yellow angel trumpet is growing in Annie Mae Hicks' yard.

Genus: brugmansia

Cultivar: Charles

Grimaldi

Although the angel trumpet is generally found growing in the Southern US or in South America, it can be grown in containers with much success.

It is grown and enjoyed because of its large trumpet-like flowers. The plant prefers a hot climate, well drained soil, and a sunny, sheltered spot. It is best grown as a small tree or shrub. The average height is about 10 ft.

The leaves are thin, large, and soft. They are evergreen or semi-evergreen.

During the growing season the plant should be well watered. It is attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds.

Propagation can be done from tip cuttings in the spring or summer. The angel trumpet is a relative of tomatoes so any fertilizer good for tomatoes works for the trumpet.

It is important to note all parts of the plant are narcotic and poisonous.
