Explorers Show & Tell open to the public
Explorers Club members - the same people who were first to climb the highest peak, first to dive to the deepest depth, first to reach the iciest poles, and first in space - are having a show and tell in Columbia Friday, October 27. And it is free and open to the public.
Explorers Exhibit (State Museum)
Explorers from the Greater Piedmont Chapter will have some of their most valuable artifacts on display at the the SC State Museum:
+ Alan Shoemaker's fossil skulls from the White River of Wyoming,
+ Janet Ciegler beetles of South Carolina,
+ Ginnie Saunders's close-up photography of local flowers,
+ Jerry Bright's photographic moments in South Carolina,
+ Jack Boggs' American Indian artifacts,
+ Dr. John Safko's images from deep space, and
+ John Hodge's photography of the universe.
Explorers Lectures (State Museum, (9-noon)
Local explorers will tell about their scientific adventures:
+ Dr. Bob Seigler - Lake Murray B-25 Rescue Project,
+ Dr. Warner Montgomery - Slave Trade Connection between Guinea and South Carolina,
+ Dr. Donna Richter - Exploration through Public Health,
+ Janet Ciegler - Exploration through Entomology,
+ Nena Powell Rice - Exploration through Archaeology, and
+ Ginny Newell - Exploration through Conservation.
Young Explorers Challenge (Columbia Canal, 2 pm)
Four high school teams (A.C. Flora, Dreher, Hammond, Heathwood Hall) will compete in
+ A Kayak Relay Race on Columbia Canal,
+ A Chariot Race to State Museum, and
+ A Quiz on State Museum exhibits.
All of these events are part of The Explorers Club-Greater Piedmont Chapter's 30th Anniversary Celebration. They are all free and open to the public thanks to sponsors:
