(l-r) Chancellor John South, President Anne Patton, Ike McLeese (president of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce), and U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson cut the ribbon for South University's new campus in Columbia.

South University officially celebrated the opening of its new multi-million dollar Columbia campus Wednesday with speeches, a ribbon-cutting, a reception, and tours. The new campus, located off I-77 at Farrow Road boasts wireless technology, modern "smart" classrooms, graphic design labs, and a fully--equipped medical lab.

President Anne Patton welcomed the audience which included university officials, faculty, architects of the building, and students. US Representative Joe Wilson praised the tradition of South University from Draughon's Business College through Columbia Junior College to the current ultra-modern 700 student university. He noted the importance of the strong paralegal studies and criminal justice programs at the school.

John South, chancellor of South University, thanked President Patton for her tireless work with the university since 1985 when she came onboard as a professor of business in Savannah. She came to Columbia in 1999 when South University acquired Columbia Junior College and has seen its enrollment double and its program offerings steadily increase.

South noted that South University was founded in 1899 as private academic institution. It offers associates, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees at campuses in Savannah, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Montgomery, and now Columbia.

Ike McLeese, president of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, spoke to the importance of educational institutions, such as South University, in fostering economic development and improving the quality of life in the cities they serve. He congratulated the bravery of South University in bringing the color orange to Columbia.

Wilson, South, and McLeese held the orange ribbon while Patton cut it with a pair of giant scissors. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a reception under a refreshing Carolina sky and guided tours of the new facility.
