Columbia author captures Edisto

While Cantey Wright was cruising Bohicket Sound last weekend, booksellers were scratching their heads wondering on which table, history or cookbooks, his new title, Edisto, A Guide to Life on the Island , should be displayed. Some merchandisers have put the new book in both locations. Wright has been pleased with the response of Columbia's large Edisto contingent.

"The book is selling well. It's part history and lore, but it has a lot of recipes in it, too," said the Columbian who directs food services for First Presbyterian Church. Wright was headed back to the coast last weekend to board the Island Breeze to be a featured author on a Sunset History Cruise. "The organizers had on board one author who has written about Hilton Head, where we put in, then I talked about Edisto, our destination."

Wright lived on both Edisto Island and Edisto Beach before moving back to his native Columbia as his mother needed him close by. In the book his blending of history with helpful information and little-known findings about island living surprised even some lifelong Edistonians. The new book, his second about the cherished destination, but the first with The History Press, takes readers down live oak-lined roads and through tidal creeks.

Wright will be signing Edisto: A Guide to Life on the Island as a featured author during History Lovers' Market November 11 at the SC History Center, 8301 Parklane Road.
