Libraries celebrate centenarians
Contributed by the
National Library Service

The South Carolina State Library, the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), and the Library of Congress honored eight centenarians of the South Carolina 102 Talking Book Club at a ceremony Friday, October 27. South Carolina residents Louise Johnson of Columbia was among the newest inductees into the 102 Talking Book Club. The club honors South Carolina residents 100 years of age or older who participate in the Talking Book national reading program administered by the NLS. Nationally, the 102 Talking Book Club recognizes the accomplishments of the 1,600 eligible program members through induction ceremonies in all states.

NLS provides a free national reading service to people who can no longer read the standard print of a newspaper or even the pages of a large-print book. The program loans members a wide selection of recorded books and magazines, Braille books and magazines, and music scores in Braille. Members of the 102 Talking Book Club will receive first priority for books in high demand as recognition of their accomplishments. Specific information on who qualifies is also available at www.loc.gov/nls .
