The History Lovers' Market at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, 8301 Parklane Road, to be November 11, 2006

Something to match nearly every history interest will be collected in one place Saturday, Nov. 11, at History Lovers' Market, the SC Department of Archives and History Center, 8301 Parklane Road.

The first-time event is also a tribute to all patriots who fought for American freedom. From 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, authors of history-content titles, both new and out of print, will greet readers, sign books, and encourage aspiring writers.

The University of South Carolina Press, whose just-out South Carolina Encyclopedia is already in its second printing, is a lead publisher in the event. Authors of a variety of USC Press titles, included in the current catalog as well as the backlist, are expected

Featured along with USC Press and its authors, The History Press will showcase authors of some of its new titles. Rita Y. Shuler will sign Carolina Crimes : Case Files of a Forensic Photographer beginning at 10 am. The release of this, Shuler's first book, takes readers into the lab where some of the state's most notorious murders were analyzed and solved.

At 11 am Cantey Wright will sign Edisto, A Guide to Life on the Island ; and Dr. Jim Piecuch will sign The Battle of Camden: A Documentary History.

At noon Hyman Rubin III, Ph. D, author of South Carolina Scalawags , and John Hammond Moore, Ph.D, will sign Carnival of Blood: Dueling, Lynching, and Murder in South Carolina, 1880-1920.

At 1 pm Fritz Hamer will sign Charleston Reborn: A Southern City, Its Navy Yard and WWII ; and Alexia Jones Helsley will sign A Guide to Historic Beaufort, South Carolina.

At 2 pm Vennie Deas Moore, will sign Home; and John Hammond Moore, Ph.D. will sign Faustball Tunnel.

Throughout the day Dr. Christine Swager will sign her youth and children's books, Black Crows and White Cockades , If Ever Your Country Needs You , The Valiant Died , and her latest, Come to Cow Pens . Robert Dunkerly will sign his Revolutionary War guides: Old Ninety Six: A History and Guide and Guide to Kings Mountain National Park . Members of the Myrtle Beach Writers' Group will sign the variety of titles they have authored.

Vendors and dealers

In addition to books, vendors of myriad history-related wares will be displaying and selling collectible items at History Lovers' Market. Those attending are likely to discover displays of items such as antique bottles, rare books, coins and obsolete paper currency, tokens and military memorabilia, stamps and post cards, weapons and knives, pottery, and small antiques.

A sample of categories and dealers to be showcasing their items include Amanda Sheheen, a dealer of obsolete bank notes; Aimee and Greg Talbot of Eurolux, a European antiques importer; Marvin Bailey, a traditional South Carolina potter; and Davie Beard, president of the South Carolina Postcard Collectors' Club. Author and collector of antique bottles Harvey Teal has served as consultant on the inaugural event.

Speakers

While vendors are showing patrons of history their treasurers at History Lovers' Market, scholars and authors will be sharing their knowledge in the auditorium at the History Center.

At 10 am Dr. Rodger Stroup, executive director of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, will lead an appraisal session for small items of historic interest.

At 11 am Charles Baxley, Esquire, who publishes the scholarly on-line newsletter, Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution , will be joined on stage by historian and re-enactor David P. Reuwer and Dr. Jim Piecuch, author of the recently-released Battle of Camden . Their topic will be Adventures in Finding the Southern Campaign: the Battles That Changed the World.

At noon South Carolina Humanities Council Director Randy Akers will disclose behind-the--scenes scenarios attendant to The Making of the South Carolina Encyclopedia . He will be joined on stage by some of the best seller's contributors.

1 pm - Dr. Robert Seigler, the initial and sustaining energy behind the recovery last fall of the rare WWII B-25 bomber salvaged from Lake Murray, will detail the reclamation project from his initial inspiration to the plane's current status as a revered exhibition on view at the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Alabama.

2 pm - The Irish contingent of the Columbia Community Concert Band will pay musical tribute to veterans of all wars fought for American freedom.

Attendance for this family, history-focused event hosted by the South Carolina Archives and History Foundation is free. Vendors will be charging for their wares, and the barbeque plates prepared by Chas Nicholson will also be for sale.
