Sibling rivalry: Bacon Bowl VIII
October 27, 2006, was the eighth annual Bacon Bowl. For those of you who have never heard of it, the Bacon Bowl is an annual football game between the Dreher Blue Devils and their rivals the A.C. Flora Falcons. It is not only a school rivalry, but a family one as well. The Bacon Bowl gets its name from the schools' head coaches who happen to be brothers. Bill Bacon is the head coach at Dreher, and his big brother Robin Bacon is the head coach at A.C. Flora. It's the one game of the year that everyone seems to look forward to the most regardless of the records. Not even Friday night's freezing, relentless rain kept fans away. This year more than family pride and bragging rights were on the line because both teams playoff hopes rested on the outcome. Robin Bacon's defense slowed Dreher superstar running back Nick Bethea down allowing him only 89 yards, which was well below his season average of 186 yards per game. Bill Bacon turned to Rashad Flowers and other Blue Devils to step up and make plays.
The Falcons drew within three when they mounted a 20-play, 67-yard drive capped off by a six-yard touchdown pass from Tompkins to Mo Holler. The two-point conversion attempt failed. Holler forced the Devils to hold their breath when he ran a Dreher punt back to the Blue Devil 20-yard line, but Dreher's defense held giving Bill Bacon bragging rights at family gatherings, and a trip to the playoffs.
