The Coaches' Corner
Nov 3: Blythewood 84 Blue Ridge 41 (Upper State AAA Playoffs-Round 1) Joked, "Can we skip me this week?" He hoped people could see the Bengals were not trying to run up the score. His dad (Clemson assistant coach Brad Scott) chewed him out for the 84 points. Scott said it was crazy to be up by 29 points and get the feeling his team was down by three, but he was embarrassed his team had to score that many points. The Bengal defense had 38 missed tackles. QB Richard Mounce set a state record with nine touchdown passes. Receiver Marquan Jones set a state record and tied a national record with eight touchdown receptions. Brad Coleman, B-C: Nov. 3: Brookland-Cayce 0 Wilson 42 (Lower State AAA Playoffs-Round 1) Said the bright spot was the Bearcats knocked out Wilson's stud running back, and thought B-C may have a chance, but Wilson's quarterback took over. Coleman was disappointed the way the season ended, but real proud of his senior class winning four of five down the stretch to make the playoffs. Kemper Amick, Columbia: Nov. 3: Columbia 14 Ninety Six 7 (Upper State AA Playoffs-Round 1) Said the Capitals dominated the first half, but were still down 7-6. The Capitals allowed Ninety Six three plays in the second half. On facing Abbeville next, said "those suckers are good" and it reminded him of the time in 1996 when a 12-0 Columbia team faced a 12-0 Abbeville and they "beat the stew out of us." Bob Hanna, Irmo: Nov. 3:Irmo 42 North Augusta 21 Said freshman Mustafa Green who ran 18 times for 145 yards and three touchdowns is going to be pretty doggone good. The Irmo offense scored on its first six possessions of the game. On facing Dorman in the first round of the playoffs, said his kids will be focused because the Cavaliers embarrassed them in an August scrimmage. J.W. Montgomery, LR: Nov. 3: Lower Richland 0 Ridge View 35 Said he and his coaches let the kids know what they have to do to compete at this level, and the kids are excited about it. Receiver Toby Goodson was selected for the North-South All-Star game. This season was a learning experience for him and his coaches. Jay Frye, Richland Northeast: Nov. 3: RNE 7 Spring Valley 31 Said it was another typical game for the Cavaliers this year. The Cavaliers fumbled on the one-yard line and were intercepted in the end zone. Said the Vikings mashed the Cavalier defense. The Cavaliers can't make all the mistakes they make and expect to win. Raymond Jennings, RV: Nov. 3: Ridge View 35 Lower Richland 0 Said he was worried about the intensity level, but the Blazers did a good job preparing all week and the defense played well. Lots of young guys got to play. On facing Hartsville in the playoffs next, said the Blazers had to go 90 yards to win in an earlier season match-up. They have to be ready to return to that type of football environment. Jimmy Noonan, Spring Valley: Nov. 3:Spring Valley 31 RNE 7 Said defense played really well and turnovers ended the Cavaliers' momentum. Lyndon Ingram had his yards but the key was up front. The Vikings welcomed back special teams MVP Justin Jackson. Jackson was diagnosed with a kidney disease when he went to the hospital for a football injury. Doctors told him his football career was over, but Jackson hung around as a manager and was miraculously cleared to play against RNE. He had three special teams tackles.
