Lawyers celebrate Trial by Jury

Barron Grier, outgoing president of SC-ABOTA

In 1957, a small group of lawyers organized the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) to stand up for a civil jury system that was under attack by several states. Today, there are chapters in almost every state of the union with over 6,000 members. Attacks on the jury system are fewer now but more subtle.

ABOTA strives to preserve the jury system through education of their members and the public. ABOTA recruits members who display skill, civility, and integrity in their law practice.

The South Carolina chapter has 125 members and is considered one of the most active. Every year, after their annual meeting, SC-ABOTA hosts a continuing education program, Masters in Trial , in cooperation with the SC Bar and the USC School of Law.

At the annual meeting at the Summit Club, November 17, President Barron Grier turned the gavel over to incoming president Ted Speth. Three new members were installed: John T. Lay, Richard Thomas, and Keith Hutto. Honored guests were Jack Pratt, dean of the USC School of Law, and Jo Ann Murray, assistant director of Professional Education for ABOTA.
