The USS Downes and the Twin 40mm Gun
The USS Downes was situated in front of the battleship Pennsylvania , BB-38, on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. It sustained serious damage during the raid and underwent extensive repair before returning to service with the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet in 1943. It was decommissioned and sold for scrap shortly after World War II. The Twin 40mm Gun went on display in Orangeburg County in 1947. It remained there until 1999 when efforts led by Jim Nabors resulted in the acquisition by Celebrate Freedom.
