Sunset Carson, one of the most famous action cowboys of Republic Pictures will be riding across the silver screen at the Newberry Opera House during a special gathering of fans January 20 beginning at 10 am. Sunset, the host of Six Gun Heroes , produced at SCETV from 1978- 1980 died in Reno, Nevada in 1992 leaving a legacy of movies and TV shows that continue to keep his memory alive for a remarkable following.
Jim Welch of ETV's NatureSCene was executive producer of Six Gun Heroes and worked closely with Carson for several years. Welch will give a behind the scenes look at producing the series along with writer Doug Nye and Bobby Humphries, associate producer and film editor. The trio will close with Carson's best action film, Santa Fe Saddlemates . Other attractions at the morning matinee will be a showing of one of the Cisco Kid's television shows and songs from members of the Saddle Pals.
The Saddle Pals and Newberry Opera House have presented a quarterly series of Saturday morning cowboy movies for the past several years. George Coan, founder of the Saddle Pals began the group back in the early 90s as a way to keep the spirit of the old west alive, and members often come in character as stars of the Silver Screen. Coan said, "The Saddle Pals strive to imitate not only the physical appearance of these great cowboy actors but also to celebrate their timeless ideals of honor, courage, and friendship."
