Sarah Heyward Hardy Hinnant

Sarah Heyward Hardy Hinnant died peacefully on December 27, 2006, at the Episcopal Home at Still Hopes. She was 97 years old. The family received friends at 24 Woodhill Circle on Thursday after 4 and Friday after 7 pm. The funeral service was held at St. John's Episcopal Church Saturday, December 30 at 11 am with burial following in the Greenlawn Mausoleum.

Born in 1909, Mrs. Hinnant was the oldest child of Edmund Rhett and Sarah Boykin Heyward. She attended St. John's Episcopal Church, Columbia schools and graduated from Fassifern Boarding School for Girls in 1927 in Hendersonville, NC, where she was elected May Queen. After attending Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, for two years, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina in 1931 where she was a member of Delta Delta DeIta sorority.

She taught school at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School until the death of her first husband, Archibald Hardy Jr., at which time she learned the insurance business and took over the Hardy Insurance Agency.

An active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, she sang in the choir, helped with the confirmation classes, and was a member of the Daughters of the Holy Cross. Upon her marriage to Fletcher Edward (Ned) Hinnant, she rejoined St. John's Episcopal Church in Shandon, which her parents helped found in 1911.

An avid gardener, Mrs. Hinnant was a member of the Wisteria Garden Club. She was also a member of the Assembly and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina.

She was well- known for her gracious hospitality and delicious cuisine. Guests at her home through the years included many soldiers from Fort Jackson, USC students who were friends of her children, Episcopal ministers and bishops.

Mrs. Hinnant was predeceased in death by both husbands; her older daughter, Sarah Heyward Hardy; her grandchildren, Sarah Oliver Hardy and Capt. Jeffry Bradford Davis; her sister, Mrs. C. Dwight Cathcart (Coles Heyward); and her brother, Albert R. Heyward. She is survived by her sons Archibald Hardy III and his wife Sally of Columbia; Edmund H. Hardy (Beaver) and his wife Rhett of Columbia; her daughter Cecil H. Davis and her husband, Judge R. B. Davis Jr. of Jasper, Florida; her sister, Mrs. G. Stuart Clarkson (Bessie); five grandchildren and their spouses; Sarah B. Hardy, Archibald Hardy IV (Chip), Mason B. Hardy, Rhett H. Newton, Capt. Heyward H. Davis, and grandson Heyward H. Hardy; ten great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat St., Columbia, SC or Hospice Care of Tri- County, 166 Stoneridge Dr.,#100, Columbia, SC 29210 are requested.
