Petal Pushers Garden Club members learn about invasive plants
The hostess for January meeting of the Petal Pushers Garden Club was Betty Lewis, and Bernice Folsom was co- hostess. Delicious refreshments were served and enjoyed by the members on a cold, rainy day. The club learned there are thugs and bullies in gardens. Some are even called spam plants. These invasive plants show up when and where they are not wanted. Many are pretty, and gardeners who are not aware of the problems the plants can cause even want them in their yards. English ivy can cause a tree to die and is also toxic to animals. Other villains are the Japanese climbing fern, big leaf periwinkle, privet, horsetail, and, of course, kudzu. Margaret Glenn was the speaker for this meeting and prepared a detailed report on S.C. invasive plants. She gave instructions for containing these plants such as using pots for them to be used on patios. Also, new growth can be pulled up and put in a plastic bag which should be closed before being put in the trash.
