Letter to the editor Global Warming Orthodoxy
Notwithstanding the ongoing hysteria in the media and academia regarding global warming, the earth has been warming for 10,000 years (Holocene Transgression) since the last ice age. Most of this warming obviously occurred long before the industrial revolution, calling into question the syllogistic conclusion of the anointed that such trend is entirely manmade. During this time, the earth has been much warmer and much colder than it is today. For example, the Romans were growing grapes in Britain 2,000 years ago but in 800 to 801 A.D., the Black Sea was frozen and in 829 A.D., ice formed on the Nile. Scientists simply do not know, what, if anything, man is contributing to this warming trend but given current geopolitical realities, it is doubtful the U.S. can do anything short- term to curb the world's appetite for fossil fuels, even if it were shown such use contributed to global warming. There are many more legitimate reasons to wean ourselves from hydrocarbons such as dependence on unstable foreign suppliers and the toxic effects of hydrocarbons on the environment. Human population growth, including the ongoing government- induced population explosion in the U.S., is a much more tangible threat to environmental integrity than global warming in terms of loss of open spaces, increased pollution, and pressure on natural resources like wildlife and water supplies. A continuously exploding human population in a world of finite resources is simply not sustainable if we wish to have any semblance of quality of life over the coming decades. Unlike global warming, population growth is a problem the U.S. can remedy within its own borders since such growth is caused almost exclusively by open borders immigration. The only ingredient lacking in averting this truly man-made assault on the environment is the political will to place the national interest ahead of the special interests.
