Decision Making in Education

This new professional development textbook enables teachers to increase student achievement. Twenty- one teaching strategies shown by research to significantly raise student achievement are described. Sixty six to 550 studies support the effectiveness of each strategy. Developing Teaching Effectiveness is designed to be used in preservice and in- service teacher education and as a resource for teachers. Emphasis is on the classroom application of each strategy. The presentation of each strategy is easy to understand and detailed. Numerous examples of applications of each strategy are provided as well as exercises and a self- administered quiz with answers to facilitate understanding.

A companion instructor's manual is available, which contains a number of evaluation aids including a sizable test item pool, a classroom teaching observation instrument, and specifications for writing a term paper. It also includes guidelines for preparing a course or workshop syllabus.

Never before has aprofessional development textbook explained as many different teaching strategies proven to increase student achievement. "It pulls together in one place all of the instructional strategies that are supported by research evidence."

Robert Stevens, Ph.D., associate professor of Educational Psychology, Penn State University, says, "Best wishes on a job well done. I am confident there is a need for the text and instructor's manual."

Jacqueline E. Jacobs, Ph.D., professor and department head, Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations, Western Carolina University says, "Comprehensive, well thought out, well organized, and clear. I think the text and the manual will be very helpful to teachers as tools for professional development."
