The Waverly Community will hold Memory Day to help preserve its history March 24, 9:30 am- 2:30 pm; March 25, 1- 3 pm at First Calvary Baptist Church in the Family Center, 1401 Pine St.
Waverly is one of Columbia's premier neighborhoods, rich in history, with a vitality and heritage that is fast disappearing. In its heyday, Waverly was home to many of the black community's leaders, counting eminent doctors, lawyers, ministers, and civil rights activists.
Waverly was a self- sufficient and complete community with its own churches, hospital, school, theater, library, and a wide array of locally owned businesses.
This Memory Day is to help document the history of Waverly. Anyone who has photos, letters, postcards, newspapers, newsletters, handbills, scrapbooks, stories, or just memories is asked to bring them. There will be trained archivists to help preserve the treasures. There will be a scanner available and people to answer questions about how to make a tax- deductible donation of materials to the Historic Waverly Archive that is being created in the South Caroliniana Library.
For more information, call Doris Hildebrand, president Waverly Neighborhood Association, 256-4661; Gloria James, Waverly Neighborhood Liaison, 252-2514; Claudia Smith Brinson, project coordinator, 799-4901; or Terence Johnson, African American Collections, South Caroliniana Library.
