Explorers celebrate Polar Year
Explorers Club members flocked to New York City for their 103rd annual pilgrimage to the Waldolf- Astoria Hotel where Dan Rather, an Explorer since 1980, commanded the stage on the topic of the International Polar Year. Awards. Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, first woman to walk in space, was awarded The Explorers Medal. Kathryn Kiplinger received the Sweeney Medal for her support of exploration. The Finn Roone Memorial Award was given to Dr. Gerald Kooyman of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for his 45 scientific expeditions to Antarctica. Speakers. Edith Roone, first woman to set foot on Antarctica and the first woman to reach the South Pole, related experiences from 1948 when she and her husband, Capt. Finn Roone, began a 15- month expedition on Antarctica. Rune Gjeldnes told how he successfully crossed Greenland, the Arctic Ocean, and Antarctica without support teams. Raul Mayewski, author of Ice Chronicles and one who has transversed every ice field and polar region on Earth, said he now realizes that the polar regions are Earth's first responders to climate change. "Earth's sleeping giants are awakening and we must hear what they are saying." Barry Lopez, winner of all major writing awards, warned the audience of 3,000, "Do not wait for heroes, do not wait for the authorities…listen to what Mother Nature is telling you."
