Tree of Life celebrates Sisterhood Centennial
Contributed by Tree of Life Sisterhood

The Tree of Life Congregation's Sisterhood will celebrate its centennial April 27 with a special Friday evening Shabbat Service. Organized in 1905, the Sisterhood has provided critical support for the Congregation throughout its history, spearheaded the congregation's religious school, and provided important interfaith programs and services.

The Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina (JHHSC) will join in the celebration and host its spring meeting in Columbia on April 27- 29 with a special program that will consider the role Jewish women in South Carolina history.

Throughout the weekend, special panel discussions will explore the experiences of Jewish women leaders in communities around the state. The keynote speakers include Dr. Karla Goldman, historian- in- residence at the Jewish Women's Archives in Brookline, Massachusetts and author of Beyond The Synagogue Gallery: Finding A Place for Women in American Judaism . Dr. Goldman's presentation will examine the evolution of women in American synagogue life. Dr. Marcie Cohen Ferris, associate director of the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina and author of Matzoh Ball Gumbo , will address women's roles in preserving tradition and culture through foodways. The program will also feature noted Israeli performer Ayala Asherov Kalus, with the support of the Columbia Jewish Cultural Arts Committee, and the presentation of the Order of the Jewish Palmetto to Max and Trude Heller of Greenville.

Program sessions will be held at the Tree of Life Congregation, at Beth Shalom Synagogue as well as the Jewish Community Center. For more information and registration, go online at www.JHSSC.org or call 843/953-3918.
