Gladys S. Tyler

The funeral service for Gladys S. Tyler, 94, was held Sunday, May 6, 2007, at 3 pm at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, S.C. 29204 with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Rev. Ed McDowell and Rev. C.D. "Red" Williams officiated. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Low Country Orphan Relief, P.O. Box 1074, Charleston, S.C. 29402. The family received friends from 2- 3 pm in the church parlor, prior to the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel assisted the family.

Mrs. Tyler, wife of the late Max W. Tyler, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Fannie Swygert. She was a graduate of Columbia High School and attended USC, majoring in English and Journalism.

Mrs. Tyler was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 6, Ladies of the Nile, Garden Springs Club, Republican Women's Club, First Tuesday Republican Club, Military Widows Club at Fort Jackson, Forty Niners, Capital Senior Center, Senior Friends of Providence Hospital, Columbia Women's Club, Columbia Christian Women's Club, Retired Officer's Wives Club at Fort Jackson, Midlands Book Club, Christian Women's Organization, OWC at Fort Jackson, Executive Club of Columbia, USC Women's Club, Cosmopolitan Club, S.C. Advocate for Women, Historic Foundation, S.C. State Employees Association and Wednesday Women's Club. Mrs. Tyler held an office in all of her many clubs. She was also a volunteer at Town Theatre and at the Veterans Hospital.

Mrs. Tyler was a writer of poetry and received two awards from the World of Poetry Association. She also wrote articles about Americanism and religion. Mrs. Tyler was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, where she served for 40 years as secretary- treasurer of the Sunday school. She was in the Anita Way Circle, Women to Women Bible Study and served in many other capacities.

Surviving are her daughter and son- in- law, Lynn Snipes Young and Jerry Young of Charleston; two granddaughters, Shannon Lynn Stark of Charleston and Meredith Michelle Stark of Hendersonville, N.C.; and one sister, Irene S. Poole of Columbia. She was predeceased by two sisters, Nellie S. Wittig and Ruby S. Hidalgo and a brother, Harry W. Swygert.
