By Warner M. Montgomery

Warner Montgomery (r) and Portia Moore (l) portray Capt. Styles Lightburn and Queen Niara Bely of Farenya in the introduction to Cato's Rebellion.

The Lanyi African Dance Company presented a drama and dance last Friday night at the Township Auditorium. It was directed by Oluremi Sano and featured drummers and dancers from the world- renown Les Merveilles and Les Ballets Africaines companies.

The performance was based on the Cato's Rebellion of 1739, one of the first slave rebellions in South Carolina. Twenty escaped slaves carrying a banner that read "Liberty," seized weapons from a store, killed two storekeepers, and marched toward Florida gathering followers and burning houses.

The rebellion was crushed by Lt. Gov. William Bull and armed plantation owners. Twenty whites and 40 slaves were killed. The result was a ten- year moratorium on slave imports through Charleston and a harsher slave code.
