By popular demand, Tom Caskey, Dreher Class of 1956, should have been included in the list of Outstanding Dreher graduates. Dr. Caskey is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine. He has served as president of the American Society of Human Genetice, the Human Genome Organization, and the Academy of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of Texas. His genetic research documented the universality of the genetic code, discovered the mechanism of peptide chain termination, identified the genetic basis of ten major heritable diseases, opened the understanding of triplet repeat diseases (Fragile X, myotonic dystrophy and others), developed the STR method of DNA- based personal identification (now used worldwide) for forensic studies, and developed a viral vector vaccine for HIV.
Caskey lives in Houston and is the founding director of Cogene Biotech Ventures, a venture capital fund supporting early- stage biotechnology and life sciences companies. His wife is the former Peg Pearce, a 1958 graduate of Dreher.
