Math whizzes compete

One hundred and 58 high school students competed in the 28th annual CCU- AVX Math Contest, held March 30 on the Coastal Carolina University campus. Thirteen South Carolina schools and one North Carolina school took part in this year's event.

School competition winners by category from the Midlands were

Large Schools - Level 1: A.C. Flora High School

Large Schools - Level 2: Spring Valley High School

Overall Winner: A.C. Flora High School

Individual student winners were:

Sage Price, A.C. Flora High School

Peter Rassolov, Spring Valley High School

Harry Richman, Spring Valley High School

Sean Soni, A.C. Flora High School

Students in the competition were given written examinations. Level I questions were taken from Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry; Level II questions were taken from Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Winners received $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place in each category.
