Three- legged dog gets second chance

Project Pet

Chance, a male canine victim of abuse needs medical care and a home.

Project Pet is a local 501(c)3 rescue organization dedicated to reducing the deaths of over 19,000 dogs and cats in Midlands' shelters each year. There are as many heartbreaking stories in these shelters as there are animals. Day after day Project Pet faces the difficult challenge of choosing which ones to save from euthanasia and which ones will face a terrible fate. This is just one of those stories.

Recently, a Project Pet staff member was in an area shelter rescuing animals, when she spotted a three- legged dog whose eyes were pleading with her to take him from that lonely place. He had the sweetest personality, one that longed to please and give so much love. She couldn't pass him up, particularly because she knew he would be euthanized the next day because his leg deemed him unadoptable.

Project Pet scooped up this boy and named him Chance (as in second Chance) and is determined to find him the perfect home. Sadly, Project Pet has learned that Chance will have to undergo extensive surgery including further amputation, since his leg never healed properly from the initial injury.

Though Project Pet doesn't know how Chance lost his leg, it seems apparent he never received medical attention after the amputation, and his leg healed naturally. Just as disturbing and painful as that must have been for Chance, was what his x- rays revealed.

When the veterinarian turned on the x- ray lamp he was shocked to find that Chance's entire body was riddled with BB pellets from at least one, if not several, shot gun blasts. The doctor could not believe that Chance had survived through the trauma he had experienced in his five years. This boy is a true survivor.

Fortunately, Project Pet has a wonderful volunteer who will foster Chance and help him recuperate from surgery. In addition, Chance tested positive for heartworms, and the volunteer will help nurse Chance through that treatment.

Chance is not yet available for adoption, but when he is Project Pet won't let him down and will find him a wonderful home. He will finally get the second "Chance" he deserves.
