Beware the 100 deadly days
Compiled by Anne- Kathryn Anne@TheColumbia BSutaltr.mcoamn
Schools are out, the weather is warm, and people are traveling and ready to have a good time. The 100 deadly days of summer, Memorial Day through Labor Day, keep the interstate flooded and the S.C. Highway Patrol Troop 1 of Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Richland, and Sumter counties busy.

The Fourth of July is approaching and the officers at Troop 1 want people to know the dangers of the holidays and do their part to prevent accidents and death.

"We see these problems everyday. Traffic fatalities don't discriminate against age, race, or gender," said Captain Leroy Taylor.

Tips for staying safe during the Fourth of July: pDon't shoot fireworks from the interstate

pDon't park on the shoulder in order to watch fireworks

pPull far off the interstate if you have car trouble

pBuckle up pDon't speed pDon't drive aggressively

pHave a designated a driver if drinking alcohol

pWear a helmet when on a motorcycle

The message is clear that Troop 1 is taking the Fourth of July seriously as well as the weekend before and after the holiday.

"It's frustrating to see the numbers of fatalities climb, but we are making a difference. Just think of what the numbers would be if we weren't doing what we're doing," said Captain Taylor. "But it's not just up to the law enforcement. There are still many partnerships to be made, and it's also the responsibility of the individual as well."
