Former cub reporter for The Columbia Star receives top scholarship

Sydney Bryant Kornegay, has received the John Montgomery Belk Merit Scholarship as an incoming student at Davidson College. Kornegay will enroll with the Class of 2011 in August.
Kornegay is the daughter of Vance and Patricia Kornegay and is a graduate of A.C. Flora High School.
The strength of the Class of 2011 has led Davidson to award nearly $1.5 million in merit scholarship aid to more than 20% of its members. An additional $3 million in need- based aid funds have been awarded to members of the class. Overall, almost one- half of the 465 incoming students are receiving financial assistance from the college.
The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship is Davidson College's top merit scholarship and one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships in the country. It recognizes academic prowess, integrity, passion for life, and records of distinction in myriad areas of school and community life. Ten recipients per year are chosen from among hundreds of nominees from all over the U.S. and around the world. The scholarship is valued at over $170,000 over four years (including full comprehensive fees and summer stipends for travel and study).
Kornegay was a National Merit Finalist, salutatorian of her graduating class, and was selected for the A.C. Flora "Wall of Fame" by teachers and administrators. She was voted "Best All Around" female by the seniTohre c Slatastse, and was named to newspaper Golden Palmetto All- State Leadership Team as a junior. She participated in the A.C. Flora Cycling team, and placed fourth at the 2006 U.S. National Cycling Championships. She served as a cub
reporter for The Columbia
Star newspaper. She has been active in community service with local organizations like Flora Red Cross Club, and with non- profits abroad. She volunteered for two weeks in an orphanage in Honduras, spent six weeks in Malawi, Africa, with the Ministry of Hope, and is spending a month this summer in Haiti shadowing a doctor at Hospital Lumiere.
