The Limitless Sports Rolling Thunder wheelchair basketball team has received a Quality of Life Grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. The grant totals $12,600 and will be used to purchase 10 new wheelchairs and other equipment for the team.
The Limitless Sports Rolling Thunder basketball team was started in 198,1 and several of its members were paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries, making the team a perfect candidate for this grant. Most of the team's members play in regular "everyday" wheelchairs even though most of the teams they play against have stateof- the- art sports wheelchairs.
According to David Stringer, one of the team's members, "The benefit that the team will receive from new basketball wheelchairs will be tremendous. The chairs will give us a great boost in regard to increased physical fitness, competitiveness, and overall potential team accomplishments."
The team practices for the upcoming season every Tuesday at 6 pm at the Denny Terrace Community Center, 6429 Bishop Ave., Columbia.
The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation began after actor Christopher Reeve suffered a severe spinal cord injury after being thrown from a horse. Well known for his role as "Superman", Reeve became a strong proponent of and lobbied for funding and research for spinal cord injuries after his accident. After his death in 2004, his wife, Dana continued her husband's desire to help others with paralyzing injuries.
In 1999, Dana Reeve began the Quality of Life grants program. The grants are awarded twice yearly to organizations nationwide that have programs or projects that improve the daily lives of people living with paralysis, especially spinal cord injuries.
Since its inception, 1,163 Quality of Life grants have been awarded, totaling $9,220,980. Dana Reeve passed away in March of 2006 after battling lung cancer, but the Reeves's dream and spirit of helping others is still alive in the foundation.
