The Cardinals (1- 1) played staunch defense all night, especially in the first quarter, when they limited the Greenies to - 5 yards of offense. The Cardinal defense also forced two turnovers, both interceptions by junior Luke Allen. The first interception led to a 30- yard field goal by Jones Brown, giving Cardinal Newman a 3- 0 at the end of the first quarter.
On their first possession of the second quarter, the Cardinals marched 57 yards in nine plays, capped by a 24- yard touchdown strike from Brown to Palmer Stokes, the second time in two weeks the duo had connected for a touchdown. Brown's extra point made it 10- 0.
After a Christ School punt, the Greenies forced a fumble and recovered on the Cardinal 22. Two plays later, Hough Price found Chris Robinson open for a 22- yard touchdown. But Stokes blocked the extra point, and the two teams went into the half with Cardinal Newman up 10- 6.

The Greenies took the second- half kickoff and marched down the field, converting three straight third downs to continue the drive. But once inside the Cardinal 10, the drive stalled. Running back August Campbell was tackled a yard short of the end zone on third- and- goal, and the Greenies went for it on fourth down. But Price was stopped inches short of the goal line, and the Cardinals took over.
With momentum on their side, Cardinal Newman went on a 16- play, 99- yard drive. The drive was lengthened by two key third- down runs, one each by Lemon and Brown, and the back- breaker, a 28- yard connection between Brown and Allen on fourth- and- six at the Greenie 29. On the next play, Lemon scored through a gaping hole on the left side of the line.
Christ School started to move the ball down the field through their passing game, but Allen's second interception of the night sealed the win for the Cardinals.
Cardinal Newman will be back in action Friday night, September 7, against North Central High from Kershaw County.
