Warm socks for a soldier who spent the day on his feet in cold, wet boots is what the knitters of Columbia Presbyterian Community got together to provide for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. They provided a bonus as well: a short note of encouragement and prayer, along with the name of the knitter.

The group at Columbia Presbyterian retirement center learned by word of mouth about the project. Their counterparts at Presbyterian Community of Summerville had carried out this plan. It's all under the auspices of HELMITLINER Inc. of Auburn, Ill. They put out the word the soldiers had asked for warm, soft socks to pull onto their feet after a brutal day on duty. And they wanted to know the name of the person who sends the gift.

The Presbyterians who put their knitting needles to work for Socks for Soldiers included Ann Adams, Emily Fraser, Mary Ellen Timmons, Lydia Ropp, Rachel Van Patten, and Pearl Schilling.
