Myles Ivan Friedman

Graveside services of thanksgiving for the life of Myles Ivan Friedman, University of South Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus, were held September 17, 2007, in Antioch Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Myles and Betty Distinguished Chair in Instructional Research, Development Office, USC, 604 Byrnes Building, Columbia, SC 20208 or to Glenforest School, 1831 Airport Blvd., Cayce, SC 29033.

Dr. Friedman died peacefully September 16, 2007, after a period of declining health. Son of the late Max Edward and Ethel Goldman, Friedman was born April 5, 1924, in Chicago, Ill. He held professorships at Northwestern University, UC Berkeley, and the University of South Carolina where he was awarded the E. Smythe Gambrell Chair as distinguished professor. Dr. Friedman was a consultant to the U.S. Office of Education and is listed in Who's Who in America. He made significant contributions to education at the University of South Carolina. He authored 12 scholarly books and numerous articles. With colleagues Dr. Marvin Efron and Dr. John King, he founded the Institute for Evidence Based Decision Making for Education, which has contributed to improvements in the field of education nationally.

Survivors include his wife, Betty McDowell Friedman; two sons: Gregg Allen Korbon and his wife Kathryn, and Myles I. "Mike" Friedman Jr.; one sister, Blossom Krawcheck and her husband, Saul; two grandchildren, Matthew and Lyn Korbon; and nieces and nephews.
