I had the pleasure of meeting with the children's book illustrator, E.B. Lewis, at Heathwood. Some of his
works are the books: I Love
My Hair! and Bippity Bop
Barbershop both by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley.
Lewis won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award
for his work in Talkin' About
Bessie: The Story of Aviator
Elizabeth Coleman. He has a home and studio in Charleston, South Carolina where he says he works usually 15 to 18 hours a day.
Lewis is famous for showing emotion in the face of the characters he draws. He said he starts with the eyes first before anything else because after the eyes everything just falls into place.
Lewis said, "It is all about having a passion, discipline, and dedication." He stressed the work ethic and the love to do it. If it were easy then anyone could do it.
Lewis said that he is working constantly. If he is not painting then he is speaking or teaching. He shows that what is important in life is not what you take, but what you leave behind and it's about creating that opportunity.
