Symbols replace reality

The U.S. Navy is spending $700k of our money on refurbishing a barracks at the Naval base in Coronado, California. The building is shaped like a swastika. No one has worried about the building's shape since 1967, when the facility was built. An overhead view is the only way to actually determine whether the structure is offensive, and the air space of a Naval base is restricted.

Now Google Earth has people noticing. So the taxpayers are about to foot the bill so the Navy can do something nearly a half century after this building was constructed. There is no plan to alter the barracks in question. The military planners intend to disguise the roof and do stealth landscaping so the Navy won't be considered Nazis.

Appearance rather than substance has become the focus of all segments of our society. Political correctness, media hype, and the importance of celebrity determine every issue. The song and dance of saying the right things, being offended by the correct issues, and ignoring real problems has turned this country into a fairy tale.

Every aspect of our lives is shaped by opinion polls, and we form opinions based on left and right wing pundits. The success of this sham relies on short attention spans and willingness to believe anything a news anchor tells us. Anyone who actually tells the truth when it goes against an accepted belief is doomed. Check with Bill Cosby if you don't believe me.

Bible Politicians quote the because it will gain them votes, then behave as if they never read a word of scripture. Our leaders declare some dictators evil but allow others to be part of our team. Atrocities committed by some foreign governments are unacceptable. Others barely get noticed. Civil rights are based on who has the most effective lobbying groups.

Marketing, hyperbole, and insincerity rule our society. Real honesty is a quaint memory from the past. To adjust for our lack of substance, we find symbols of hate and intolerance and protest these more than actual acts of hate and intolerance.

The swastika has been around for 3,000 years. Native Americans, Chinese, Greeks, real Indians, and the British have used it for religious and aesthetic reasons.

Historically the symbol means life, strength, or good luck. The 45th American division even had one on the patch of its uniforms in WWI. But when Hitler decided to use a swastika to decorate the Nazi flag, the design was doomed. And when the Third Reich was defeated and the atrocities of the movement were uncovered, the formerly benign symbol changed forever.

Today, anyone who displays a swastika is immediately branded as a Jew killing, white racist intent on purifying the human species. There are no exceptions.

The swastika isn't the only symbol affected this way. People of all nationalities have been hung for centuries, yet a noose placed in a tree by some high school dimwit transforms an entire town into a racist hell and makes money for Al Sharpton. It also turns a convicted drug dealer who leads a mob attack on a teenage boy into the next Rosa Parks.
