Roger Staubach, executive chairman of The Staubach Company and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback, spoke to graduate students Monday, October 29.
Staubach was the third speaker in the 2007 Wachovia Executive Lecture Series, sponsored by Wachovia and the Moore School of Business.
Staubach led the Dallas Cowboys to four Super Bowl appearances in the 1970s. He founded his Dallas- based, global real estate advisory firm in 1977, two years before retiring from the National Football League.
Under his guidance, The Staubach Company has grown to 1,400 employees located in more than 60 offices throughout North America.
In fiscal year ending June 2006, the company completed 6,750 transac- tions totaling $26 billion and 835 million square feet. Worldwide, the DTZ Staubach Tie Leung alliance has 12,000 professionals delivering services and solutions to multinational clients.
Staubach began in real estate in the Cowboys' off- season working for Henry S. Miller in Dallas. He shared both football and business memories with the students, favorably comparing Henry S. Miller with his Cowboys coach Tom Landry. He said Miller and Landry were a lot alike, particularly since they had the same haircut and neither would benefit himself at the expense of someone else.
To identify teamwork at play and at work, Staubach talked about a Cowboys turnaround in 1971.
"In 1971, we had the most talent, but we didn't have the spirit. At the midpoint in the season, we were four (wins) and three (losses)." Mike Ditka, whom "everyone listened to because they were afraid of him," stood up to urge the team to put aside individual interests and blaming and work together. The team made an immediate turnaround, and the Cowboys won all seven of their final games plus the Super Bowl.

Staubach jointly owns Hall of Fame Racing, a NASCAR Nextel Cup team, which began racing in the 2006 season.
On January 25, 2007, he was named chairman of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Bid Committee, whose goal is to have the Dallas area host the Super Bowl in 2011.
Staubach serves on the board of AMR Corporation and Cinemark Holdings. He continues to be involved with the Children's Cancer Fund and the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation.
