Richland One volunteers win state awards

Two Richland One volunteer groups received awards of excellence from the State Department of Education. The Junior League of Columbia and the Mill Creek Elementary PTA were recognized at the State Board of Education meeting on November 14.
The groups were nominated for the state volunteer awards because of their outstanding dedication to Richland One schools. The members of the Mill Creek PTA provide exceptional support to teachers and encourage students to pursue different learning experiences.
The Junior League of Columbia sponsors Smart Matters pre- school programs in 10 Richland One elementary schools. Junior League volunteers have committed countless hours and generous financial support in preparing the district's youngest learners to be ready for school.

The State Department of Education Volunteer Awards honor individuals, businesses, and organizations that have made significant contributions to public schools. Winners are selected based on their efforts to promote student achievement, enhance school- community relations, strengthen school or district resources, encourage a positive climate, and promote teacher effectiveness.
