Charley's Backyard Stars
Columbia
By Pace Cassell, fifth grader in Susan Smith's Class, Seven Oaks Elementary

The sights, sounds and smells
Of my Columbia home
Are the best in the world
Right to the State House dome.
The ripest of peaches
Sweetens my mouth.
The sun shines down gently,
This is why I love the South.

Sunburned to perfecttion
After a day at Lake Murray.
Floating on the water ...
There's no reason to hurry.
The State House is a reminder
Of our fascinating history.
How it is so wonderful:
That is the mystery!
Charley's Backyard Stars are young South Carolina students who have read the Official Children's Book of Columbia, Charley's Columbia Backyard, and wish to tell others about their own backyard experiences. Author Caroline Bennett has visited schools and collected writings and art from participating students. Visit www.BAreader.com .
