Cardinal Newman split a pair of varsity games with the visiting Northwood Academy Chargers Tuesday night, November 27. The girls lost the opener of the doubleheader, 38- 34, while the boys won the nightcap, 63-40.
The Lady Cardinals (2- 1) got off to a good start, opening the game on a 9- 0 run. But the Lady Chargers (2- 0) slowly worked their way back, using a tenacious defense to trail by only two at halftime, 19- 17. Then the visitors from North Charleston took command of the game in the third quarter, not allowing a single point while scoring 11 of their own.
The Lady Cardinals made the game close near the end, but they were plagued by bad shooting, turnovers, and foul trouble all night. Cardinal Newman shot only 27.5% (11- 40) from the field and 50% (9- 18) from the line. They committed 20 turnovers and 17 team fouls on the evening, which allowed the Lady Chargers to stay ahead late.
Senior Jessica Cowhen led Northwood Academy with 11 points, while 8th grader Alex August contributed 11 points of her own for Cardinal Newman.

In the second game, the Cardinal Newman boys played at a frenetic pace, keeping pressure on the Chargers for most of the game. The Cardinals (2- 0) jumped out to a 19- 4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, keeping a lead of around 20 points all night. A pair of seniors led the way, with Michael Littlejohn scoring 15 points and Trey Coleman adding 13. Sophomore Chris Cook led the Chargers (1- 1) with 14 points.
Cardinal Newman is back in action Friday night, November 30 facing the Wilson Hall Barons in Sumter.
