Living green in Forest Acres
Story and photos by John Dixon

Forest Acres' new recycling truck
Recently, Forest Acres won recognition from Richland County for the refurbishment and beautification of the City's Public Works Area on Robert Springs Road. According to Public Works Director Joey Paschal the City invested approximately $70,000 in the effort. The project included replacement of the deteriorating barrier fence, fill in and re- landscaping of a boggy section on the equipment yard, closing in of the mechanics bay, addition of a bio- diesel tank, resurfacing of the parking area, and creation of a new drop off recycling area. Local contractors donated fill materials and asphalt millings for the resurfacing and re- contouring projects.

Chief mechanic Marion Dove had been fighting mosquitoes and the elements as he worked in the open bay to keep the City's fleet of vehicles operational. He is thrilled with his new enclosed workspace because it has decreased discomfort and increased efficiency. Paschal has been recommending renovations to the area since he first accepted the job. Interim City Administrator Miles Hadley opened the door for discussion and current Administrator Mark Williams stepped up to the plate to see the project to fruition. The improvements to the Public Works area are only part of the City's efforts to live clean and green.

Council recently enacted a tree replanting incentive program, began beautification of the City's parks, and approved purchase of garbage and recycling trucks. According to Paschal, the City is in the process of converting all diesel- powered equipment to bio-diesel as soon as manufacturers' warranties allow. Dove notes there have been no problems with the vehicles converted thus far stating, "They seem to be running both cleaner and quieter."

In addition to the new recycling truck Forest Acres residents can once again drop off plastic, glass, aluminum, and paper at the drop off recycling area. Curbside pickup continues for recycling, organic yard trash, and household garbage on a regular schedule. Paschal notes that his Public Works employees take pride in their work and in Forest Acres. In return, the citizens of Forest Acres show their appreciation with kind words, cool drinks on hot days, and occasionally baked goodies. Life and work in Forest Acres is good.
