New hobbies for the new year
New courses at Midlands Techical College

Midlands Technical College Continuing Education is offering several brand- new personal interest courses this spring. New course topics include painting with oil, watercolors and acrylic; mixed media collage; and ballroom dancing. Returning for spring are many popular courses including book writing, sewing, calligraphy, and cake decorating.

In the all- new Painting with Watercolor class, participants of all levels will explore watercolor techniques such as flat wash, graded wash, wet- on- wet, and wet- on- dry. They'll learn how to select a reference photograph, enlarge an image, and build up color with emphasis on transparency and luminosity. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays Feb. 19 - Mar. 13, 6 to 8 pm, at MTC's Harbison Campus, cost $119. Course ID: CEART53201.

In Painting with Acrylic, participants will discover how to use multiple reference photographs to create a unique piece of art. The class will focus on the choice of materials and supports, preliminary studies, basic concepts of perspective, grisaille (monochromatic painting), glazes (color build- ups), and painting preservation. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays Mar. 25 - Apr. 17, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Harbison Campus, cost $119. Course ID: CEART53301.

In the new course Intro toMixed Media Collage, students will learn and experiment with different cutting techniques, and learn basic design concepts and pasting techniques. You will explore many types of collages and come away with several finished projects and finished pieces. The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays Feb. 4 - Feb. 20, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., at the Harbison Campus, cost $79. Course ID: CEART53401.

In the all- new Ballroom Dancing course, anyone can learn to dance like a star in just six easy lessons. This course can get you ready to dance at that next special event or cruise.
