Cardinal Newman hosted Hammond on Tuesday, January 29, in a battle of two evenly matched girls' and boys' squads. Both games were tight throughout, but when the horns sounded, the Skyhawks had bested the Cardinals both times. Hammond's girls won 40- 38 in overtime, and the boys won 49- 47.

In the first game, the Lady Cardinals and Lady Skyhawks fought back and forth with neither team leading by more than five points at any time. The teams were tied at 11 after one quarter with senior Lauren Smith leading Hammond with seven points. At the half, the Lady Skyhawks led 25- 20 after senior Ali Hymson hit three consecutive three- point baskets. The Lady Cardinals were not through and pulled even at the end of three quarters, 28- 28. Junior Tori August scored six of her team- high 13 points in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Hammond pulled ahead by three, but a three- pointer by Molly Rainwater erased that lead. Then, with just over two seconds remaining, Smith took a pass and launched a three- point shot from about 25 feet, hitting nothing but net. The Hammond fans went wild, but there was one problem- the referee had called Smith for traveling before the shot. The teams went into overtime tied at 37.

In overtime, after both teams traded free throws, Hammond got the ball with a chance at the last shot. Reserve Mason Castles got the ball in the lane and made a basket with six seconds remaining. The Lady Cardinals had a chance to tie, but Hammond intercepted a pass in the frontcourt and ran out the clock. Hymson led Hammond with 13 points, and Smith chipped in 12.

The Cardinal Newman boys came out determined to avenge a six- point loss at Hammond three weeks earlier. The game started oddly because the Skyhawks were assessed a technical for improper behavior during warmups. However, the Cardinals could not take advantage of the gift, as Zach Hrovat missed both free throws- a harbinger of things to come. Cardinal Newman then began the game with a 9- 2 run, and the Cardinals led after one quarter, 13- 10.

Hammond star senior Daniel Bailey, who scored 25 points in the earlier meeting between these teams, was held scoreless by the Cardinal defense. In the second quarter, the Cardinals stretched their lead to eight points behind the scoring of Tré Coleman and Nick O'Rourke, both of whom scored five points in the quarter. The halftime score was 26- 18, Cardinal Newman.

Hammond made adjustments at halftime that Cardinal Newman could not counter. The Skyhawks came out in a press, and the Cardinals either committed turnovers or took rushed shots after getting by the Hammond defenders. Also, Bailey and junior Cliff Ayers came alive for the Skyhawks. Bailey scored seven of his 10 points in the quarter, and Ayers hit a pair of threes and a long two in a four- possession span. After three, the Skyhawks led 35- 32.

The fourth quarter proved to be as dramatic as the girls' game. Cardinal Newman took a two- point lead after a Littlejohn lay up about midway through the quarter, but Josh Walters countered with a lay up off a steal to tie the game. Then Bailey scored what proved to be his biggest basket of the night, a dunk off a steal to put Hammond ahead for good.

After Ayers hit another three and he and Walters hit three- of- four free throws, the Skyhawks looked to have the game in hand. But Coleman hit a lay up to cut the lead to four, and after a turnover by Hammond, Hrovat was fouled in the act of shooting a three. But he could make only one of the three free throws- his only point of the game- and then missed a three to tie after getting the rebound. Ayers hit two free throws to push the lead to five, and a late three by O'Rourke provided the final margin.

Ayers led Hammond with 18 points, while Motto led the Cardinals with 15.
