Just 30 miles from downtown Columbia, Dreher Island State Recreation Area offers an outside escape that is close to home.
The park, acquired from South Carolina Electric and Gas in 1970, has served as a location for national fishing tournaments since its inception.
Dreher Island boasts a large quantity of largemouth and striped bass and is ideal for a weekend fishing trip.
A boat ramp provides easy access to Lake Murray, and the tackle shop meets the needs of almost any fisherman.
Participants may camp in an RV or bring a tent and camp at one of the park's 15 tent sites. Cabins and villas are also available for those looking to relax after a day on the water.
Dreher Island also has walking and hiking trails. The Billy Dreher Nature Trail is only one- fourth of a mile.
Visitors seeking more of a challenge can explore the Little Gap Trail. The path is 2.1 miles long and somewhat more strenuous. There are several picnic shelters, which are available year- around.
Dreher Island's visitors' center tells the history of the park and Lake Murray itself.
To drive to the park, visitors should take I- 26 to exit 91. Next, go through the town of Chapin and turn left on Dreher Island Road and go three miles to State Park Road, which will lead to the park entrance.
