When arguably 32 of the top 38 girls' soccer programs meet in one tournament, it's easy to see why The Taco Bell Viking Cup is one of South Carolina's premier high school sporting events.

From February 21- 24, the entire class 4A top 15, class 3A top eight plus No. 10 and 15, Class 2A's No. 1 team, SCISA's No. 3 ranked team plus several other powerful programs battled weather and each other on soccer fields in and around Spring Valley High School. In the end, defending 4A state champion Wando defeated Lexington 2- 1 for the title.

Other schools of local interest finished as follows: Airport (2- 1), Dreher (2- 1, Bracket finalist), Dutch Fork (2- 1), Irmo (2- 1), Blythewood (1- 1- 1), Brookland- Cayce (1- 1- 1), Chapin (1- 2), Ridge View (1- 2), Ben Lippen (0- 3), Richland Northeast (0- 3), and Spring Valley (2- 1, Bracket finalist).

The Taco Bell Viking Cup Ashley Dent Senior MVP $1,000 Scholarship was awarded to Wando forward Shawn Haviland.

Haviland was not the only financial beneficiary of this tournament. Viking Cup Director and Spring Valley girls' soccer coach Stephen Lea estimates a potential economic impact of six figures to the area in and around Spring Valley. With 20 teams from out of town, that's around seven hotel rooms per team, plenty of meals, gas, shopping, and due to the inclement weather, extra rain gear was a favorite purchase this year.

Lea says without sponsors like Taco Bell, Columbia United FC, Providence Hospital, Moore Orthopedic Clinic, Firehouse Subs, Sun Printing, Moe's, and others the tournament would not be possible. He estimates their contributions total about $20,000. Lea also says about 300 people including the Spring Valley girls' varsity and junior varsity teams, coaches, parents, students, and other volunteers make the tournament what it is today.

The Spring Valley program tries to raise money with the Cup as well. Sponsorships cover much of the expense and entry fees cover other expenses and officials. The gate covers the rest. Lea says, "At whatever point we break even, we begin making money. The weather hurt us this year, but we still did O.K."

The following local players were named to the All Tournament Team: Casi Jones, Airport; Anne Armstrong, Ben Lippen; Sara Graber, Blythewood; Alley Greer, Brookland- Cayce; Noel Holmes, Chapin; Marie McGwier, Dreher; Sam Vickers, Dutch Fork; Kristen Werdunn, Irmo; Kira Campbell, Deirdre Ball, and Jessica Marshall, Lexington; Sara Simpson, Richland Northeast; and Janna Komorowski, Spring Valley.
