Put Tillman statue on his grave I love your paper, but I must comment on Ben Tillman. His being a racist may not be enough to take down the statue, unless that is the only real reason his statue is there to begin with. Most of the others you mentioned made some significant contributions. If all Tillman did was to make racist speeches, and racists had his statue erected primarily to honor and flaunt his racism, then the statue should go, especially if he made no other significant "contribution" to South Carolina. Did he really do anything good enough to warrant a statue on our State House grounds? I think he did enough bad things that would warrant removal. It never should have been erected in the first place. A much better argument can be made for the Confederate Flag, which is inflammatory to a large portion of our population. If more people knew of the character of Ben Tillman (not just his racism), his statue would be far more inflammatory than the flag. No, we cannot change history, but we can easily correct some mistakes made in the past. Put his statue on his gravesite, if it must be preserved. Otherwise, destroy it. stephenradams@bSetellvseo uAtdha.nmest |
